Sant Kabirdas (1440-1518 circa) was a famous poet, saint and social reformer of India. His writings have greatly influenced the Bhakti movement. Kabir Panth which is a religious community recognizes him as its founder and its members are known as Kabir Panthis, the followers of Saint Kabirdas.

His writings include Bijak, Sakhi Granth, Kabir Granthawali and Anurag Sagar. The major part of Kabir's work was collected by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, and incorporated into the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib. The hallmark of Kabir's work consists of his two line couplets, known as Kabir Ke Dohe.

The birth anniversary of Sant Kabir is observed on Jyeshtha Purnima as per Hindu lunar calendar.



Sant Kabir Jayanti is a yearly event that celebrates the birth anniversary of Kabir Das, who was a renowned poet, saint and social reformer and lived in the 15 century. According to the traditional Hindu calendar, the day falls on the full moon day of the Jyeshta month. Sant Kabir Das Jayanti is usually observed either in the month of May or in the month of June every year as per the Gregorian calendar. The day is celebrated by all classes of people not only in India but also in other countries. The great poems and works of Kabir Das designate the coherence and immensity of the ‘Supreme Being.’

The followers of Kabirdas across the country spend the entire day in his commemoration. Many people like reading the great poems written by him. On the day, seminars will be organised to make his followers understand the importance of his great teachings. His followers believe that Kabirdas is still alive in their hearts. The city of Varanasi, the birthplace of this great poet, celebrates the day magnificently. At Kabirchaura Mutt, spiritual talks are organised for his devotees. Religious leaders will preach the prodigious lessons of Guru Kabirdas. On the day, you may observe superior celebrations at the temples of Kabir in several regions of the country. Schools and colleges will create a platform for students to read to his poems.

Importance Of Guru Kabir Das Jayanti

Sant Kabir Das was born in Uttar Pradesh to Muslim parentages. He showed interest in spirituality at an early age and called himself as a child of Lord Rama and Lord Allah. He was not interested in spiritual discernments. The great poet respected all the religions of his time equally. The Bhakti movement was highly influenced by his works. A few of his renowned writings consist of Anurag Sagar, Kabir Granthawali, Bijak, Sakhi Granth etc. He established a spiritual community called ‘Kabir Panth.’ Today, this community has a vast number of followers.

Kabir Panth

Kabir Panth is the name of the spiritual community founded by Kabir Das like mentioned earlier. The followers of this community are referred to as Kabir Panthis, who are scattered across the country. The community spreads the legacy of Kabir Das. Besides, the community of Sikhs will preach the supreme lessons of Bhagat Kabir Ji, which is the name given to Kabir Das by Sikhs. Guru Arjun, the fifth guru of Sikhs, collected the writings of the great poet and assimilated them into the scripture of Sikhs.

Kabir Das used a very simple language to write and convey the true meaning of life. Hindi was used to write dohas, which are simple to understand. The dohas written by him is not only a piece of art. They will also be the great recipes of life to the public. The people of his time happily accepted his poetry. He began writing dohas as a means to spread awareness among the people. His poems and dohas have been adopted at the school-level curriculum.
